SPRINGTOWN — School has started in the Springtown area, and some kids went back to class with backpacks they received at the We ARE Our Brother’s Keeper event Aug. 10.

Jessica Castro, co-founder of the overdose awareness group, indicated the Back-to-School Family Day was a success; 200 backpacks, most of them filled with school supplies, were distributed, and families were able to enjoy snow cones, a bounce house and games.

Back-to-School Family Day was held in conjunction with the third annual Cars for the Cause car show. Castro would’ve preferred to have had more cars enter, but the fundraiser did garner $800. The money is expected to go to We ARE Our Brother’s Keeper’s funeral fund that supports those who lose loved ones to overdose. People who died of overdose were also memorialized on the square at the event.

Collectively, the car show and the back-to-school event included a DJ as well as organizations like Parker County Hospital District, Unity Recovery, Springtown Narcotics Anonymous, Guardians of the Children Big Sandy Chapter, Parker County Stand Up Against Suicide and Domino’s Pizza.

“We feel beyond blessed with the volunteers that helped us, businesses that helped us with raffles, supplies and games,” Castro said on her Facebook page. “Thank you to the families that allowed us to honor your loved ones in our memorial section. And thank you to everyone that came out and enjoyed the gorgeous cars!”
