Azle celebrates National Senior Center Month

Posted

AZLE — Jackie “JJ” Joy, director of the Azle Senior Center, also known as the Azle Adult Activity Center, was recognized Sept. 3 by the Azle City Council with a proclamation declaring September Senior Center Month in the city. The center is located near Ash Creek Park at 601 Southeast Parkway.

Joy spoke about recent and upcoming developments for the center, which provides meals and resources for area residents over the age of 60. While struggling with decreased attendance after the COVID-19 pandemic, Joy said in recent months the center has seen some steady renewed growth. The center usually holds Bingo games on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and a hot meal at 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. It plans to restart regularly scheduled exercise classes beginning Sept. 30 as well.

“We’ve worked for three years to get exercise classes going again,” Joy said. “The city has opened a door that makes it possible for us to have that. So, we're excited about that. The last week of September is going to be Fall Prevention Week, and so we're planning some special activities. The fire department has agreed today to send somebody over to take blood pressures, and we're going to have some other fun activities that we don't have all the details on yet, but we're planning a good time. Shane Wall from Northwest Physical Therapy will be coming over to talk to us about fall prevention on that day. So, we're excited there's new things coming down the pike, and we're just really excited about it.”
