AZLE — An event that attracts thousands of attendees each Fourth of July is expected to have its biggest showing yet. Follow the Flag, billed as a Christian patriotic celebration, is held annually at Azle Central Park, 263 W. Main St. It is organized by the Azle Area Ministerial Alliance with sponsors and volunteers representing organizations, churches and businesses from across the Azle area.

Attendees can hope to see a huge fireworks extravaganza, eat free food, listen to live music and more on the evening of Independence Day. Food will be available from 6-8 p.m. while supplies last with the professional fireworks display kicking off after sundown.

Hot dogs, “walking tacos,” snow cones, pickles and cotton candy will be provided by local vendors and face painting and temporary tattoo tents are expected to be available. Tea, water and a misting tent will be on site to help keep park-goers cool and hydrated during the summer heat. Per city ordinance, no alcohol is allowed in public parks. According to AccuWeather predictions, this year’s celebration is expected to be significantly cooler than last year’s with 99% cloud cover during the day and a high temperature of 91F. At night, Azle is expected to see a moderate breeze with a 25% probability of precipitation and temperatures in the 70s.

Each year organizers select one community member to receive the Lew and Sandy Shaffer Award for outstanding contributions to the community and support for local Christian endeavors. The award, named after the event’s progenitor and the founder of Son Shine Ministries, and has been presented during Follow the Flag since 2012. Winners of the award, excluding the upcoming 2024 recipient, are listed below.
