SPRINGTOWN — Springtown City Council got some updates Nov. 19 on projects relating to city parks, roadways and playgrounds, as well as new details on upcoming holiday celebrations.
Director of Public Works Joseph McCanless started out by updating the council about a recent project brightening up the city parks by planting new trees in the south park, which is behind Brookshires.
“Some of the things we have been working on in our parks, if you haven’t noticed in our south park, we planted eight new trees at the entrance,” McCanless said. “It really brightens up the place.”
McCanless also updated the council about the recent cutting of a multitude of dead trees.
“The other thing that our parks needed improvement on is that we have been cutting down a lot of dead trees this year,” McCanless said. “We normally try to wait until winter to cut down trees cause it's a slower time of year for us but dangerous and hazardous trees, we try to get to. Out of the 12 that we had planned for this year, we’ve already had to take six out because of the dangers of them falling.”
Next, McCanless gave an update about the new covers that will be placed overhead at the playgrounds to help control the harsh sunlight.
“They will be started on the covers on Thursday and they’ll have them finished on Monday,” McCanless said.
The timing of the covers’ arrival was better than expected as they were supposed to arrive a few days after Thursday, Nov. 21.
Then the director informed the council that the sealing projects for the roads are finished.
“We finished up our sealing project which includes Church Street, Mockingbird Lane, Dove Trail, Meadowlark Trail, Robin Court, Night Street, Sixth Street, North Avenue D, Third Street, Jean Drive, Jean Court, Martha Street,” McCanless said. "We also added Railey Cove onto that. That street was in good condition, it just needed to be sealed. Which totals up to 5 miles of roadway we were able to seal.”
McCanless also said public works employees are in the process of completely rebuilding Avenue D and Hilltop.
City Administrator David Miller updated the council on the upcoming holiday hours. The city offices will be closed beginning at noon Nov. 27 and will remain closed until Monday Dec. 2. For Christmas, the offices will close at noon Dec. 23 and will reopen Dec. 26. Offices will also close Dec. 31 and Jan. 1, 2025 to allow employees to celebrate the New Year holiday.
