AZLE — Starting Jan. 5, Cross Timbers Golf Course will be temporarily closed until stated otherwise due to cold weather. The Pro Shop and Roadrunner grill at 1181 South Stewart Street will continue operating daily from the hours of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., respectively. The course’s greens will remain covered until temperatures rise. This winter’s first big cold snap will bring projected temperatures as low as 20 degrees in the first full week of January.
Last season, cold, harsh, dry conditions and a record amount of play and cart traffic — 47,000 rounds in 2023 — caused the course to experience a phenomenon known as winterkill. Re-sprigging the affected fairways, roughs and greens cost the Cross Timbers' private club and the city a projected $65,000 and left much of the golf course closed from May through September, 2024. By closing the course and shielding the grass from the elements, the city hopes to prevent future disruptions to course operations and protect the health of its greens.
