AZLE — This year’s volleyball team was among the best in Azle history, head coach Kenley Buckholt said at a Dec. 16 board of trustees meeting.
While introducing the team and recognizing members for their accomplishments in front of parents, teachers and board members, Buckholt said that as district runners-up with a record of 28 and 14 the girls were “the most winningest team in Azle history to date.” She continued, saying this year’s players were only one of three to ever make it past the area round of playoffs and were the first in the program’s history to make it to the regional semifinal match.
Individual players have been showered with recent accolades for their outstanding performances, with Jacqueline McClain winning Offensive Player of the Year for the district superlative team, captain Ellie Lund winning Utility Player of the Year and others being granted the first team distinction. McClain was also selected for the Texas Girls Coaches Association 5A All-State Team while Ellie Lund and Gabby Briseno were named to the TGCA Academic All-State Team.
Buckholt is in her seventh year in Azle and her second year as head coach. She is aided by Dusty Crafton, assistant varsity coach.
“I am so very proud of all of these girls’ hard work, and we did some really awesome things in the season,” Buckholt said. “These girls paved a new way for Azle volleyball and I'm really excited to see what they keep doing and the legacy that our seniors leave behind … We had some incredible support this season, and we have the best village around and that really contributed to our success. I love working here. It's a very special place.”
