AZLE — Members of the Azle High School swim team were recognized at a Feb. 24 Azle Independent School District board of trustees meeting following the team’s historic season. Coach Amy Estes was called on to speak about the accomplishments of her girl and boy swimmers. Estes said the students had worked hard and made waves after starting their season in August. Without a pool of their own, the group gets up 5:45 a.m. to travel to the Decatur ISD natatorium for practice. Near the season’s conclusion Feb. 9–10, the girls team placed third at a Mansfield Regional competition.
“We've never been able to do that,” Estes said. “So, that was a first for us to get a flag and be honored as a team. Our guys, if you'll notice, they're a little scant in numbers, but they work hard as well. We had a fantastic end and we are proud of their accomplishments and we look forward to the next year. I do want to say over half of these kids up here are first year swimmers. We only had three returners. We graduated six last year, so it was a rebuilding year. More than half are brand new swimmers. So, we're really proud.”
