Azle retirement home uses baby dolls in dementia care, seeks sponsors

Posted

AZLE — Legacy Oaks of Azle, a local senior living community, is partnering with The Grand Baby Project to introduce therapy dolls to its memory care residents and invites families, businesses and community members to support this initiative through sponsorship. Legacy Oaks aims to raise $1,800 to provide these dolls to each resident in memory care, offering comfort and companionship.

The Grand Baby Project, a nonprofit organization, provides dementia therapy dolls and training for care staff. Research shows that therapy dolls can help reduce anxiety, promote social interaction, encourage physical activity, and support emotional well-being in people with dementia. Therapy dolls are recognized as a valuable, nonpharmacologic option that helps residents cope with daily challenges.

“Legacy Oaks of Azle is committed to enhancing the lives of our residents, and therapy dolls are one way to make a positive impact,” LOOA Executive Director Nichol Wesson said in a recent press release. “With the community’s support, we hope to provide a therapy doll to every resident in memory care.”

Each therapy doll sponsorship costs $75, and all donations are tax-deductible. The $1,800 goal will cover a therapy doll for each resident in memory care. Sponsors will be recognized and will be invited to join a community event celebrating this effort.

Sponsors will be tagged in all posts related to the program on Legacy Oaks’ social media platforms. Sponsors will be invited to a baby shower event, where they can meet residents and families and learn about the program’s impact. Sponsorship offers exposure within the senior care community and increases local brand awareness. Families, businesses and healthcare organizations are invited to contribute to this effort.

“Some people think that might make them feel like they're a baby or something like that,” LOOA Community Relations Director Kelly Case said at a Nov. 5 chamber lunch. “But what it does for them is … maybe they don't want to take a bath or a shower that day, you can utilize that baby and say, ‘well, baby Rose, it's time for her shower. Can you help me bathe her’ And they'll be like, ‘yes.’ And then you can mention, ‘well, next, let's do you.’ So, it could kind of help with some of those behaviors that they might have gotten.”
