AZLE — The Azle Independent School District welcomed more than 1,100 district employees with its yearly convocation Thursday, Aug. 1. Teachers, administrators and others from across the district packed an Azle High School gym to celebrate the new school year after a school vendor fair earlier in the day. Azle ISD board of trustees President Bill Lane, Azle Education Foundation Vice President Philippe Lalonde, Azle Mayor Pro Tem Randa Goode and Azle Area Chamber of Commerce President Michael Wright each spoke on a variety of topics including their history with the district, their hopes for the future, and the threat school vouchers may pose for public education during the upcoming school year.

Azle ISD Superintendent Todd Smith was introduced as the event’s keynote speaker. Smith recalled his childhood growing up in Arlington and what led him to Azle and his current position.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by AHS student body President Chloe Hennessy. The Azle Marching Green Pride, AHS cheerleaders and Emerald Dazzlers dance squad concluded the event with music and feats of acrobatics.
